For centuries believers have been meeting together to remember God’s story of creation, redemption, and recreation. At Foothills Church we believe strongly that this discipline of meeting together is essential to a person’s walk with Christ. We believe what the Bible says about the importance of regular fellowship, and how believers benefit from meeting together (Hebrews 10:24-25). One of the benefits of gathering together is the retelling of the Gospel story and how the life, death and resurrection of Jesus has shaped and impacted humanity. One of the ways we retell His Story is through singing songs that allow us to praise Him for what He has done in our lives, and to remind ourselves of biblical truths surrounding who God is, Jesus’ death and resurrection, the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, and the goodness, power, and majesty of God the Father. In worship we have the opportunity to praise Him and thank Him for His goodness and His love.
What is Worship?
We believe that God is GREAT and He deserves the love and affection of the people He has created! Worship is giving to God praise, love, honor and adoration for who He is and what He has done. And we believe what the Bible teaches us about God’s response to worship. God loves it when we sing to Him, and He responds by joining with those that are worshiping him (Psalm 22:3). Because we love to have the presence of God at Foothills we dedicate time at each weekend service in worshiping Him through song. And we want all who attend to engage in worship easily, so we select songs that are very singable so that even first time visitors can join in easily. The lyrics for the songs are displayed on screens on both sides of the stage and on television screens placed throughout the sanctuary.
At Foothills we believe that worship should not be limited to just when we gather on weekends. We believe that every second of every day brings an opportunity to worship God and honor Him (Psalm 113:3). We believe that we personally can worship God by serving Him in all areas of our lives, including in our homes, workplaces, and schools. We believe that we can worship Him also by honoring Him with our finances, through prayer and regular Bible reading, regular church attendance, and by making ourselves available to be used in serving in our church and community. We believe that worship goes beyond singing songs, but is in fact a lifestyle (Romans 12:1-2). Worship at our weekend services is supplemental to a week’s worth of worship!
At Foothills we celebrate the Lord in a variety of ways. However, our weekend gatherings always include prayer, teaching, and music. Our worship is contemporary, with guitars, electric keyboards, and drums in addition to vocalists. We recognize that there is great diversity in the songs being written to celebrate and honor God so we use worship songs from a variety of sources including artists like Bethel, Hillsong Music, Elevation, and Chris Tomlin. We also are blessed to use songs written by members of the Foothills worship ministry. A common thread in all the songs sung is that they are biblically sound and focused on honoring Jesus.
We believe that when you are at Foothills you are family. We encourage you to get to know those around you when you are entering service. Say “hello” or smile at the greeters. This helps to cultivate the family atmosphere that we have here at Foothills, because when you are here you are family.
Everyone is invited to respond to God by leaving their seats and coming up front as the music plays. While this is not required, we have learned that there is a level of freedom to worship in a more open environment than just remaining at your seat. Plus the chances for being distracted during worship are minimized. As people worship the Lord you may observe a variety of different expressions being used. Besides singing, worshippers may lift their arms and hands, clap or shout. After the pastor’s message a time is open up for people to respond to God; either from something said during the message, or through the leading of the Holy Spirit. People are encouraged to come forward to receive prayer from ministry team members, or just to kneel, pray, and simply spend personal time with God.
At Foothills, we regularly observe the Lord’s Supper (or Communion), a practice that Jesus instructed his disciples to do “in remembrance” of his sacrifice on the cross. At Foothills, Communion is open to anyone who has placed his or her faith in Christ.
Baptism is the outward symbol of an inward reality that a person has placed his or her faith in Jesus and is committed to living for him. Baptisms are special celebrations at Foothills. The baptismal is located at the front of the altar, elevating baptism as a central event in our church community.
Foothills gives parents the opportunity to dedicate their children to God during a Sunday service. This affirms the biblical principle of parents modeling how to love and follow Christ for their families. The Foothills community responds by promising to support parents in their efforts.
